On March 20, 2005, Dr. John H. Sadler was awarded the "Medal of Excellence" by the American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP) for his commitment to the quality care of kidney patients.
From the Award Ceremony Program:
"Since 1979, Dr. Sadler has served as President and CEO of the Independent Dialysis Foundation (IDF), a regional non-profit dialysis provider, located in Baltimore. Throughout Dr. Sadler’s distinguished career, he has led, participated and advocated a multitude of patient-focused programs.
In 1973, Dr. Sadler was a founding member and first president of the Renal Physicians Association, which continues to strongly pursue quality healthcare for patients. He participated in the Institute of Medicine ESRD Program Study, which produced the 1991 report “Kidney Failure and the Federal Government”. In 1993, Dr. Sadler led the Life Options Rehabilitation Advisory Council to develop the Life Options Rehabilitation Program, helping kidney patients live long and productive lives. During the last two decades, he has strengthened the non-profit sector through his work, not only at IDF, but also at Dialysis Clinic, Inc., by serving as a proactive member of the Quality Management Committee.
Regarded as an individual of tremendous ability, versatility and decency, for the past four decades, Dr. Sadler has continually strived for optimization of quality patient-centered care. He has proven to be an effective patient advocate with a “patients come first” approach. Dr. Sadler is truly a respected and adored individual, not only within the renal community, but also throughout the world. Through a unique and sincere interest in his patient’s lives, he continues to raise the quality of life for thousands of kidney patients."
Dr. Sadler enhances the group of past recipients of this award which include some of the “who’s who” in Nephrology such as :
Dr. Willem Kolff – Developed the first clinically useful hemodialyzer.
Dr. Belding Scribner – Developed the “Scribner shunt”, the first successful vascular access device for hemodialysis.
